Founder Attila Szucs, the son of bar and restaurant owners, decided to pursue a degree in Engineering instead of continuing in the family business. Through a classified ad in the newspaper, he began his new journey in making diamond wheels, and discovered a passion for the manufacturing industry. When he decided to start his own company, he enlisted the help of his friend and colleague, Walter Kuzmich, and asked him to venture on the journey together. Walter recalls the fact that Attila originally did not want to hire him because he came to his interview in shorts and with sand in his hair. However, the two eventually became good friends and business partners. In 1993, Attila and Walter moved from New Jersey to see Attila’s vision come to life.

Once they moved, they started in a small office in Asheville, North Carolina. The pair salvaged metal to make their first wheels. Attila recalls one of his first customers, who was a local toolmaker, that came to ask for a wheel.  Attila designed a wheel for him and he says, “He loved it!” Within three years, they expanded their office space. In another four years, they were able to purchase a 36,000 sq. ft manufacturing facility located in Mars Hill, North Carolina.

Since then, Advanced Superabrasives has grown into a dynamic, small business, with customers nationwide, and in over twenty-three countries. Did you know that ASI invented the dual  grip 12V9? That wheel along with other industry innovations led ASI to grow. According to Attila and Walter, “We changed the industry!”

Attila is recently retired, but continues to wander the hallways of ASI with Walter. Attila’s son, Jonathan, is now owner and President of the company. Jonathan enjoys traveling to visit customers and assisting them with their grinding needs.
